Chapek IV
Generic
The Chapek system has several asteroid belts and one large planet, Chapek IV; an irradiated vacuum world devoid of any life but potentially rich in minerals. The lack of a gas giant or indeed any easily accessible water makes the system unattractive for exploitation. Apart from cursory scans the system and world have largely been ignored.
Specific and unknown
The world is indeed rich and abundant in mineral wealth but the high background radiation and lack of gas giant world make mining costs prohibitive.
A self-replicating race of robots has arrived in the system and established themselves on the world. The lack of atmosphere and backgrounds rads does not affect them and the isolation is ideal in their desire to multiply. They are now over a million in number and are growing exponentially each month. They have extensive mining and industrial facilities with work proceeding on a large and extensive starport. The aim is to build a fleet of sub-light vessels to launch to nearby worlds to spread and establish their presence on other worlds.
