The modular cutter was originally developed as a utility vessel to support the Imperial Navy and Marines. It consists of two parts, a 20 ton hull and a 30 ton modular section. The 30 ton modular sections are all different g but interchangeable making the design very versatile. Some can even operate independently of the 20 ton hull, such as the quarter’s module, while other cannot, such as the fuel skimmer module.  The modules take around fifteen minutes to detach or attach while some can be used together as parts of bases or stations.  Examples of some of the 30 ton modules are as passenger modules, lab modules, medical modules, weapon pods and  fighter support. The crew of two is for the 20 ton hull part with additional crew needed for differing modules.

This particular modular cutter, registered as cutter number 2, has been adapted to work as a human waste reprocessing and ship waste disposal cleansing unit. Many vessels have not had sufficient maintenance and space dock time in the late civil war period.  Those that do tend to not prioritise the waste processing unit leading to issues with them. Cutter No 2, known as the Dung Beetle, assists in this matter by removing waste and cleaning the systems by forcing high pressure cleaning fluids through ship’s systems. It can be messy and at times unpleasant work but it is important.
